Berlin/London: Politics

This is the victory column where Barack Obama spoke this July, in front of a crowd of 200,000. And this is where JFK gave one of his most famous speeches in Rathaus Schöneberg, down the street from where we were staying.

Here's a few funnies to enjoy!

Future Pres

Yesterday, I took the day off of work so that I could experience our future president's oratory style, firsthand. Sen. Obama spoke, at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, to a packed house of mostly African Americans. Instead of waiting with the masses, I surreptitiously snuck in with the crippled folks and other jerk-offs (or are we geniuses?) through the ADA door. Once inside, the excitement was deliciously tingly! Thousands of people coming together for the same purpose is a very inspiring experience. I forced my way onto the floor and stood for four hours in a tight crowd of angry, funny and interesting people. It was worth the wait. I made friends, enemies and had the privilege of standing less than 10 feet from one of the most convincing, elegant, eloquent, and natural speakers I have encountered.

Obama arrived to screams and cheers and immediately left the podium to walk and talk to the audience in a comfortable manner around the stage, "like Oprah," he said. He managed to joke with the attending constituents while responding to his opponents criticisms. He spoke of the importance of veterans' benefits by referring to his grandfather's service in the military during WWII. Described how the GI Bill provided his family with shelter and education, allowing him to get to where he is at today, showing that although he hasn't himself fought in a war, his family has sacrificed for this country. The audience responded the most enthusiastically to his comments on healthcare; he noted that McCain hasn't proposed his own solution to the grave injustices in our current system. That was his only mention of other candidates that I could hear (the acoustics were terrible) beside mentioning that this election is not a blame game. He stuck to defending his stances on the issues, including his rejection of suspension of the fuel task this summer, which has been supported by Hillary and McCain.

We had a lot of laughs. One guy yelled out, "we got your back, b!" Afterward, the same man told us that he would be following the Obama trail to DC. He stood as long as we did on the floor, for hours, and as we walked up the stairs, I noticed he had a significant limp. Obama had inspired us all, and made the discomfort of the wait (8 years/4 hours) worth it.

Thanks to Marco O'Toole for the brilliant photograph on his fancy phone.

Hey-Adams, a DC MUST

The Hay-Adams Hotel is situated directly across the street from the White House. The namesakes of this DC gem are John Hey, who worked for Lincoln, McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt, and Henry Adams, the renowned intellectual and descendent of John and John Quincy Adams. Hay and Adams lived in adjoining houses on this spot in the late 19th century and theirs was one of the leading salons of its time, hosting discussions of the greatest minds of their time from a variety of disciplines. After their deaths, the property was leased to the Brazilian embassy, later torn down and became this fancy-pants hotel.

The walls of the bar downstairs are covered with caricatures of politicos, presidents and wannabe politicians. Clearly they were drawn in groups by different artists during different eras. One of the walls displays Obama, Nader, the Hillary Clinton of today, as well as Al Gore, post presidential loss, in scuba gear; this is the most updated. Another has Clarence Thomas and Marion Barry smoking a crack pipe, clearly from yesteryear. There are at least two Carters, Clintons and Ted Kennedys. It was fun running around pointing out political heros and foes. Luckily my Aunt Nancy and Jimmy are the biggest nerds ever to be torn from a human womb, so we knew most everyone drawn there. This was one of the coolest places I have ever been in DC, and I've been there plenty of times over the years. Simply put: it rules.

Here's me, hitting on the 65 year old Indian bartender, trying to score a free drink (failure).

Our future president!!!
The family, in a booth. This place was chill as fuck. It was like Fox's without the grime. Oh, and with the prestige of former visitors, such as the rulers and great thinkers and shakers of our nation.

We're winning!

One day, I think we will see Christian Bale and Barak Obama rule the world.
Kicking ass in MD, DC and VA.

This is funny.

If anyone buys this Obama necklace, please take a picture of yourself wearing it, and then send it to me, post it or something. I'd really love that. Thanks.
Click on it to buy it.

Dropping the Obomb!

Yes, Hill has more delegates, but Obama snatched up more states.
There's more to come, and I can't wait!

Votas, yo

I know that you, like me, are psyched about Super Tuesday (that's tomorrow, you ignoramuses, j/k, j/j). Over twenty states, and American Samoa, will tell the rest of us how they feel about such fabulousness as Obama and the serious ambition of Hillary, the resident evil of Huckabee, the hypocrisy of Romney, and the real darkness... McCain!

I know what you're thinking. "But I thought McCain was okay." No, he's not. He's tainted. Don't vote for him (write to me and I'll get into it with you). He's a puppet of the GOP and he looks like Michael Jackson.

Some interesting knowledge I've gained this election is about American territories. Guam, American Samoa (very unlike the Girl Scout Samoas, which are melt-in-your mouth delicious), PR, and the US Virgin Islands all have some voting privileges. Decent ones, at that! I just thought I'd mention this. Please read more on Slate.

Also, did you know that Republicans and Democrats vote on different days in South Carolina because they can't stand being in the same voting area as each other; some antiquated racist shit.

There's my electoral info.

Also, there will be a show at Churchill's tomorrow. Come support Danny L. and many other local artist who I love dearly and sometimes respect.

Caucus, bro

Hey, so, I was watching CSI or something like that last night, totally engrossed in the morbid tale. Then the results from the Iowa caucus popped up on screen and that crazy political flea bit me in the butt again. OBAMA! I know this vote is mostly irrelevant, but wow, go Obama! Obama is going to stick it to your mama! That's my suggestion for a campaign slogan.

Can we talk honestly? I have always said that we'd have an ethnic minority president before a female and that it probably wouldn't happen within this century. I mean, and of all the females, Hillary? Ain't gonna happen. But Obama... he seems so perfect, except that America is incredibly racist and his freaking name is Obama (Obama vs. Osama--- my other slogan or Obama 1, Osama 0). I swear there is no way some backwoods Deliverance types or suburban men with tiny penessss will vote a half-black man into office. Yet that hope still burns in me that we'll get a lady or someone who can actually tan, or just be naturally tan in office before 2100. I like Obama. I'll take one of those, please.

The Utne Political Blog reports that God actually endorsed Mike Huckabee... or at least that's what a lawn sign in Iowa says. Quality. I love middle America. Fuck evolution and women's choices, this is God's providence! The fact that Huckabee doesn't believe in evolution means that I must change his name here to Mike Hickabee... corny, I know, but necessary. We are evolved from monkeys. Not Davie Jones Monkees, but actual primates.
