Matt Damon hates my guts, and I hate his

Last night at Poplife, I had a good time. But you know who didn't have a good time there? Matt Damon. That's right. Will Hunting was at good old White Room, and he does not like me.

I was enjoying the fact that there's two for one before midnight, and that I wasn't driving. I was loitering at the bar when the actor plopped himself next to me- though not facing me. I was aggressively friendly with Matt's friends in order to try and get myself a picture with him, all of whom tried to keep me away. I explained that I lived in Stoughton, my dad's from Brockton, I'm of Mass stock, too. I deserve a shot. Eventually, I realized that all niceties were useless, and I went in for the camera kill and got nothing but the top of his head. I just walked up and took a picture and they all started yelling at me, "this is not a zoo!" or "does this look like a ZOO???!!"
I stumbled away, and I really wasn't much but disappointed that I didn't get a face picture.

On the other end of the spectrum, Le Tigre's JD Samson was really sweet and easy to talk to. I know she's not high prof like Matty, but my friend said someone at Smith changed their name to JD when they transitioned. I think that makes her a big deal to at least some people.

I have to say, I don't understand what the hell crawled up Matt's ass, but there was no reason for him to yell at me like that. He makes a shit ton of money, he is FAMOUS, why is he surprised some douche like me wants to take a picture with him for my blog? I am a goddamn nice person. I may be brutally honest, and hostile at times and a big bitch, but I am a kind human. I am nice to old people and animals. I always do people favors. I work to help children and sick people (when I'm employed). I volunteer occasionally. Who the hell is HE to talk to ME like that? Then, adding a cherry on top of this pretty sundae, one of his friend's friends, who his friend pawned me off on, like fell in love with Miami, bro, and trailed me the whole night. He wasn't bad or offensive or anything, but did he get me a picture? No.

The other funny part was that my tab was open at the bar where he was sitting, so even after the yelling incident, I was stuck standing behind Mr. Damon. I don't even think he's a good looking guy. He has chronic keg face. It was just funny that my cousin Farrah and I stayed up late last week (with hives) in Emmittsburg to watch Good Will Hunting. I thought it was fated that we should take a picture together.

So, here I am reporting to you that Matt Damon is a crappy "star." I have met many a famous person in my day, and never have a met a ruder dude. And, yes, Matt and co, it did sort of look like a zoo. No offense actors, but you guys kind of are on display.

Despite this only being your side of the story, it still sounds like you were a complete asshole! lol.

EAT said...

You know, I just don't think there's any need to be rude about a picture. It doesn't hurt anyone.

Anonymous said...

It doesn't sound like Matt himself did anything to you - his friends were just being protective. And your behaviour was pretty obnoxious.

EAT said...

Hmmm... are you Matt Damon? He yelled at me, too. Honestly, I'm harmless, and I'll take obnoxious, but the appropriate response is to laugh at me, not yell at me.

Anonymous said...

After a few thousand people try the same thing where ever these "stars" might go, I think they could get a more than a little sick of the attention.

farrahflave said...

O.K. so where's the picture of the top of Matty D's head?! POST IT! I think that if one goes to a popular night spot like White Room, star or scenester, one should anticipate obnoxious photo-ops regardless...
AND LIZ, if you had mentioned that your lovely cousin and you stayed up all night with hives watching GOOD WILL HUNTING, perhaps you coulda gotten a sympathy shot?! you are not just ANY FAN, you are THE MIAMIBRO!

I have run into Matt Damon in the 'hood many times, and he has always been extremely nice, even going out of his way to sign autographs for the waitresses at the bagel place. MB-I'm just some douche blogger like you, but I really hate it when I am out with my wife (or not) and everyone is taking pictures and then they turn up on Facebook and whatnot. If you are such a fan, why don't you call his agent and ask for an interview or something?
"He yelled at me." Matt Damon doesn't hate you because he doesn't know you. If you aren't prepared to get yelled at don't stick your camera in somebody's face without asking first. And if they say no, just politely walk away. I'm sure you'll have another shot some day. And I know you still like him-even a little bit?

EAT said...

Danny, thanks for commenting and not being anonymous. Obviously, I was employing hyperbole when I wrote that anyone hates anyone. I'm just messing around.

As far as getting an interview, or even being a fan- I think the point is being missed. I think of blogging, alternative media that it is, as a sort of exercise in guerrilla writing. I'm not writing because I want to kiss someone's ass or because I want to please an advertiser or editor. This is my forum to express my philosophy. It is a subversive one that values expereince over propriety.

I wasn't out to HURT anyone, and I wasn't out to please anyone, other than myself. This guy makes millions because of his face- as my coworker pointed out, millions of people are losing their jobs, are out of work, and this guy makes a ton of cash because of his public image. I can't sympathize, and I won't.

Next time I run into any of you, please, feel free to take my picture, even if my skirt's over my head and I'm stumbling home.

Totally off point, but I ate at Maxie's at Cobb's Corner (twice) the weekend before last! My Cousin is the feared "Chopped-Liver Nazi."

Maxie's is dirty.

They've also done nice things with that Shaw's since last I went when my good grandmother was alive. But I'm sad that they knocked down the Castle-Mall.

My entire family (except for my immediate family) lives in Norwood, Stoughton, Sharon, Brockton, Randolph, Raynham, Waltham, Newton, Brookline...

The reason everybody is upset at you is because you committed the ultimate faux pas by disrespecting a member of America's royalty.

When peasants are in the same room with royalty, they must only speak when spoken to, and only use their cameras when given the red light.

And you obviously failed to sympathize with poor Matt Damon who works so hard to provide entertainment for the peasant masses.

We should be grateful for people like him, who make movies that allow us to forget about our everyday hardships for at least a couple of hours.

And we should return that favor by pretending we don't see him when he is out partying with friends in trendy, populated night spots, for this will only make him feel uncomfortable.

Perhaps we should just ignore his movies altogether and allow him to become just another Hollywood has-been, which would then allow him to hang out in public without getting harassed.

That's hilarious!
My family is in Easton, Norton, Brockton, Quincy, Brighton, West Bridgewater...
I haven't spent much time in Stoughton since my Memere passed away, but we still go to Town Spa for pizza, everytime we're in MA. You have to eat the linguica!
I remember Shaws fondly and well. And what about Honey Dew? Classic New England: coffee and doughnuts.

Kisses to you, Carlos.
Thanks for being a pioneer and for standing up for our rights.

Emily Sue said...

Woah. That's unfortunate. I've never heard bad things about Damon before, he's always in the "nice" celeb category. I just cannot feel sorry for celebs in situations like this, it's not like you were a paparazzi chasing him down in a car or snapping photos of his kids from a mile away with a telephoto lens. Even if you stuck a camera in front of his face or were rude and agressive - who really cares! Like you said, he gets paid many, many millions of dollars and is typically treated like a god among men, so cry me a fricking river, Matty, if you get inconvenienced once in awhile. So a bajillion people want to get a picture of you - you're a celebrity and us little people are the reason you're so filthy rich! It's the price of fame, so love it or leave it! He could have made your night by taking one lousy pic and maybe it would have been fun for him, too.

Why don't you blog the Vince Vaughn story, he's the one you'd expect to be an a-hole but wasn't!

Anonymous said...

EDIT: I mixed up my metaphors in the previous comment. I meant to say red carpet or green light and it came out wrong.

But the rule is, never photograph a celebrity unless they are walking the red carpet.

Otherwise, you are guilty of harassing royalty.

Danny Brody said...

Carlos-I was wondering why your comments weren't here but after reading them I now realize it probably took you all morning to come up with that biting satire of contemporary American mores. Bravo.

MB-You have every right to stick a camera in anyone's face, and I agree that celebs should be happy anyone cares at all about them. The point I was making, is that I have interacted with the guy in public and he has been very cordial. If he was a douche to you, I'm sure you weren't the first, nor will you be the last.

But the fact that you are blogging the hell out of it allows you to:
A) Sound superior to some alleged Hollywood a-hole, and
B) Get tons of hits for your blog using said alleged Hollywood a-hole's celebrity as bait.
I'm not sure what's so subversive about that.

Anonymous said...

Danny,

I don't exactly wake up at the crack of dawn and immerse myself in the blogosphere debates.

But it's good to be missed. I'm flattered.

EAT said...

Emily: you made me laugh out loud. I love you and I love the support. My favorite part, "so cry me a fricking river, Matty, if you get inconvenienced once in awhile." Amen.

Danny: I wasn't intending to "get hits." I was simply using this forum to relay my experience.
I'm not looking down, but if I were, here would be where I'd do it. I joke around a lot. I love busting balls. It's what I do best. Matt Damon is a great actor, I don't even care that he yelled at me, I just don't like being treated like dirt. Like Emily said, I wasn't shooting his kid with a huge lens. I was using my G9 with a zoom that doesn't work beacuse of a sand incident on Block Island.

It's kind of funny that I just blogged about my experience at the inauguration, I write about what's happening in Gaza - no one cares, except for some hateful person who called me an anti-semite. Then I mention some celeb who was rude to me and it's like - holy Christ - I'm such a beast and a user. It just proves that they are treated like royalty.

I'll tell you something, I'm not perfect, but I'm not apologizing when I'm not in the wrong. I did't act that badly. I am usually the first to admit when I'm wrong.

Thanks for arguing with me though- it's kind of fun.

Anonymous said...

Matt Damon always has that smug look on his face. Miamibro, i'm on your side on this one. Don't come to our town (MIA) and act like you own it. Stay on the south side of Boston, Good Will Hunting....

And since when does writing a single post on a subject translate to "blogging the hell out of it"?

SteveBM said...

I am a native of Reading, MA. Always good to hear the thoughts of fellow Massholes.

Ive met Matt Damon a few times. First time I met him was years ago at the Red Room at Shore Club late, late, late night. He was a cool shit. Ignored the whores clamoring for his attention and talked with me, some other dudes, and a few cute scholarly looking chicks instead. I will admit I was pleasantly surprised. Then he bought the room a round of cocktails (There was probably 30 people there cuz it was past closing time from what I remember).

People dont like their pic being taken, period. I was snapping random pics on NYE and 2 broads were so goddamn adamant about me erasing theirs taht I handed them the camera and let them. It was comical but understandable. Celebrities get this every day, all day, so you have to understand how it can be annoying. I just got back from Sundance and met tons of celebs or was in their vicinity and didnt snap one pic. Why? Because I really dont give a shit and think they are just regular people who happen to have pursued a different, more public, career. If you really arent enamored with people like Matt Damon, why would you want their picture? By doing that, all you do is stroke the ego of a person whom you think has an ego already. And that doesnt make sense now, does it?

EAT said...

See, you misunderstand the reason for taking the picture. I guess I can't explain it, but just to say that it's funny. It would have been funny for me and my friends. That's all.
It's nothing to think about or mull over. Famous people are funny, because they are- or they should be. I have gotten star-struck many times, like when I met Spike Lee- I can't explain it but I just laughed and laughed. There's something kitsch about them. Maybe I'm just a little too John Watersian or too much of a jerk, but like Emily said, the whole experience could have been fun. I'm a shitload of fun, for fucksake, and I'm not in it to hit it, I'm just so ME and that's why it's a privilege to meet me (I sound so lame).
When you're at Sundance or something, it's not that interesting to be around so many famous mugs at once, I've seen loads of them in one spot, too. But when you're at freaking Poplife, it's just the appeal of it all, and I'm like a Japanese tourist with my camera- I'm a compulsive snapper.
Y'all don't have to get it; I know funny.
I'm glad you got a free drink out of him anyway.
I'm done on this subject. The end.

Anonymous said...

You should be ashamed of yourself. Just because he is a star doesn't mean he can't go out without being photo stalked.

Maybe you are just jealous because you are not famous and now you're blogging about it to tear him down.

Well Matt Damon will not be brought down. He has faced worse than you and has survived.

EAT said...

Are you kidding? What a nutcase!
Sounds like you're the stalker, ANON.

Seriously, though, if you're going to criticize me, someone whom you don't know, make yourself known. Thanks, psycho.

I never knew Matt Damon had so many fans. Or bodyguards.

Take away the fact that it was Matt Damon. Would you 'aggressively' force your way into a conversation of a group of guys you didn't know, continue to harass them, then shove a camera in their face?

I disagree with making a judgment on a person based on first behaving as Miami Bro did. And I could care less about Matt Damon.

EAT said...

Seriously, what's up with these people?

CB: As a matter of fact, yes I would interrupt groups, and I have. I'm a rowdy girl and if you don't like it, there are plenty of boring chicks out there with crappy stories and nothing to say. Besides that, I'm 5 feet tall: how utterly frightening!!!!

Do you know how many times guys have come up to me to bug me, hit on me or just start problems with me? Do you think I EVER act like that with dudes that hit on me? NO WAY! Because, although I joke around, I know what it means to be RUDE and I don't like rudeness.

So, listen up nutsos, go have some sweet Damon wet dreams and get over how much more shamefully aggressive all five feet of me happens to be toward multi-millionaires.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, if I were standing with a group of guys in a bar, I would welcome you to interrupt us.

I found this story from Carlos Miller's site. In addition to what Carlos wrote earlier I just want to add that I am amazed at some of the hypocrisy I am reading here. I am willing to bet that the same people who criticize you for taking that picture are the same people buying up the tabloids and/or downloading pictures of Matt Damon from the net. Where do they think those pictures come from? The photographers they love to hate are the ones producing the pictures they treasure...

Major props to Carlos for putting us all in our rightful place within the American caste system. Viva los paisanos! I'd rather be a peasant any day. It's simple, really. If you make your living off of being recognized (Matt Damon, movie star), and your living is enhanced by being well regarded (Matt Damon, movie star), part of your job is publicity. When in public, your fans will want pictures...combined with the right to take pictures in public, having good grace in the face of your public is just part of your job. This isn't some paparazzi, just a fan wanting a picture. Not acquiescing is not a big deal, but the people acting like the photographer was somehow going too far need to take a deep breath and realize who and what Matt Damon is.

Anonymous said...

farrahflave said...

Ok just to raise awareness since a bunch of people are reading my lovely cousin's blog today, I will use this forum to post a quote from the blog from GAZA (yes it is unrelated to Matty D but it is good FYI to know what this human rights violation situation in GAZA is like). Below is the excerpt from the above link:

I received an e-mail today from an American Jew I know who has just entered Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. She shares one story: “I met a mother who was at home with her ten children when Israeli soldiers entered the house. The soldiers told her she had to choose five of her children to "give as a gift to Israel." As she screamed in horror they repeated the demand and told her she could choose or they would choose for her. Then these soldiers murdered five of her children in front of her.”

THIS IS REALITY! So what if a progressive blogger attempted to snap a shot of a respected actor?! Nobody was hurt--or harassed! I think true harassment is evident in the excerpt above. Both parties were just annoyed by the other ~ NO BIG DEAL! Next time everyone should just be more polite to each other... Now can we move on to bigger and more important issues as evident in earlier and to-be blog entries?! Thanks for your time.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS MY RIGHT!

"a fan" are you FIDEL CASTRO??? I have First Amendment rights. I'm not doing anything but relaying my experience. I always thought Matt Damon was a supporter of human rights and freedom of speech-- if that is TRUE, then he would support me writing what I want to on MY forum.

farrahflave said...

"A Fan" I have to change the subject because it seems that no apology is necessary ~ I think MiamiBro, Matt D, and his friends settled their encounter Saturday night... Why are you so worked up anyway?! Also, Middle East news should be on everyone's radar -- it is sad but it is the truth and we should all channel our energy towards positive treatment of each other everywhere no matter one's social status.

EAT: you totally have freedom of speech here... isn't that the point of blogs?!

For him to get worked up like you said he did shows me that you were not only rude, you were harassing him.

If you're that rude to him, how can I believe all the other nice things you say about yourself?

Liz, I think some of these people are pushing your buttons, because really...Who cares about Matt Damon that much?

He is an actor people! He makes a living for your attention and adoration. Without the fans, he is nothing. Does it really affect your life that he got upset at a blogger? He has plenty of lawyers and does not need your defense.

...and really, like someone said prior to this..there are more pressing issues out there open for debate, like our Foreign Policy (Pakistan getting bombed, and the White House making no comments about it), the loss of civil liberties (Obama hasn't dismantled the patriot act yet), these ridiculous bail out packages that are completely going to screw over the American people, which finally leads to our backwards monetary policies which is going to lead to the collapse of our dollar....that should get you upset, not The Talented Mr.Ripley getting bitchy over a blogger.

Believe me, he gets it worse in L.A. from the paparazzi, and I never see the Matt Damon Coalition do anything about that.

How old are you? Because, from both the manner in which you write, and the manner in which you behave (from your own account), I'd guess around 15. An obnoxious, giddy, celebrity-focused, teen-aged princess sparkle pony idiot.

Matt Damon doesn't hate you. Stop giving yourself so much credit. He hates rude pricess sparkle pony idiots, and you've already sunken back into some blob in his mind, if you're even that much.

You're exactly what's wrong with our culture today. So go buy something and feel better. On credit. And live the rest of your life that way. Buy everything you cannot afford, and get your nipples all hard anytime a celebrity or brand name is part of the picture.

A word for many of the ANONs out there (not you, Eddy): I'd like to point out that you are being extremely hypocritical in your offensive commentary against Miami Bro since you are being RUDE by calling her sexist names (i.e. cunt) and drawing negative judgment on her behavior. In case you need me to spell it out using your preferred PG-rated adjectives: you are being "rude and obnoxious," thus hypocritical, for slandering Miami Bro in your perception of her treatment of Matt D and his buddies. This is political since I think GENDER POLITICS are obviously involved in this dialogue int hat ANONs think it's just fine to use sexist vocabulary and innuendos.
Why don't you read OTHER BLOG entries on Miami Bro and check out available links to DOMESTIC AND GLOBAL AFFAIRS and comment on THOSE if you are so "not concerned" with celeb gossip and seemingly concerned with passing judgment on the blogger's personality and perspective before stereotyping?! Otherwise, your insults are really just a reflection of your hypocrisy of being rude~ the exact behavior that you are criticizing. I at least admit that I read and comment on many subjects without insulting the author (unless they are being offensive to the reading audience). I hope you understand how your commentary can be interpreted as offensive... All that said, I HOPE PEACE FINDS ALL OF YOU!

For the slow people misinterpreting my humourous blog and the meaning of what it means to be political: I'm not taking this blog down, even though I could give a crap about MD.

This, however, is the one dude that actually does make me giddy.

How can I get M. Damon's agent's number?

Good on you. If Matt Damon doesn't want his picture taken he should stay home and not go out in public. He's in a public place, he's fair game to have his photo taken. If you were being nice to him he should have let you take a photo with him, would have been nice of him to do so.

It's amazing how many times I get comments from people when I'm out taking photos. People think they know all the rules and they don't know crap about where and when you're allowed to take a photo.

MASSHOLES UNITE!!

Here's the problem, Miami bro. You never asked the guy if you could have a picture. Instead you kept jamming your camera into the scene setting the flash off in everyone's face. I guess you didn't notice the guy who walked up, asked matt for a picture, and matt took the shot himself. So get real and stop blaming others for your inability to be cool in a situation. You're not blogging, you're blowing.

There is nothing about White Room/Poplife that is private or gossip/drug-free and that place has NO rules of etiquette. Its like walking into a strip club, but i think people might have more sex at Poplife. That's why people go, because yes, Matt Damon, you did enter a zoo. Im MORE than sure he got over it, and as for apologies, his fan club sounds like they want you to apologies to them not Damon.

There seems to be an abundance of hero worship on this page. You fuckers seem to idolize this guy just because he makes films. You find it necessary to jump to his defense. You're idiots. As far as I'm concerned, if you're human, you qualify as a piece of shit...at least sometimes. So, we're all spilling from the brim with feces, stirred up by one person's visit to some hang out in Miami (though it is one of my favorite places to meet exceptional girls with moderate standards). Matt Damon's, not a douche, but if he doesn't like his picture taken, tell him to go to any Opium Group venue, and stay the fuck out of smaller venues. Those mother fuckers treat outside photographers like lepers. He would have no issues there. Miami, bro, you should have gotten in his face and snapped off as many as you could get away with. Eventually, some drunk member of his entourage would have physically offended you. Then you could use the impending civil judgement and proceeds from your images of a drunk Matt Damon and friends getting arrested to permanently bank roll your existence.

Putting aside the question of whether photographing MD was right or wrong in the manner it was done, I'm happy to have learned the term "Massholes" from reading about your Damon Daredevil antics on this and other blogs.

I lived in Wellesley for a bit, and never heard the term. I think it could be seasonally appropriate. Like in winter when it's crappy cold and everyone hates everyone. Massholes. We need a term like that for Miami peoples.
